New award to enable young people to make their mark on society

A new award, in memory of the late Peter Mc Lachlan will offer young people under 30 years old a once-off opportunity to do something remarkable, challenging or inspiring with a view to making their own mark on society.

Peter Mc Lachlan worked for many years Director of Bryson House in Belfast, which provides services for older people, families and the local community.  He served the Northern Ireland community as a leader, politician and political activist. He was passionate in his work for reconciliation and peace, and was a social entrepreneur constantly seeking solutions to the problems and issues that confronted the Province.

The Peter Mc Lachlan Civic Society awards will recognise young individuals making their own contribution to the health and vitality of community life.  Applicants may be engaged in any field of interest. such as community development, conservation, heritage and the environment, health care, youth affairs, advocacy, mediation, public affairs or reconciliation. The awards will be for a maximum of £1000 and may be spent on a range of activities including training, attendance at international conferences, travel or education projects.  Applicants will also be asked to demonstrate current involvement and leadership, and how the award might enhance this.

Speaking at the launch of the awards, Trustee Heather Thompson said :

“Peter Mc Lachlan was passionate about Northern Ireland  and about finding solutions that would enhance the quality of life for everyone here. He had huge belief in young people and in their ability to think creatively and lead with vision.  This is what these awards are about, and we look forward to exciting entries.”
